Smitteroos Down Under: Self-Sufficiency

The NEW complete book of SELF-SUFFICIENCY - The classic guide for realists and dreamers is een van onze meest gebruikte naslagwerken uit de boekenkast. In het nederlands heet dit boek geloof ik 'leven van het land'. Als wij weer eens iets nieuws bedenken dan verschaft dit boek precies genoeg info voor ons om te bepalen het het een goed, matig of slecht idee is. Nu hadden wij, zo bleek, een buitengewoon GOED idee. In het boek stond dan ook:
The pig fits so well into the self-supporter's economy that the animal almost seems designed with that in mind. It is probably the most ominvorous animal in the world and will thrive on practically anything. It is even more omnivorous than man, because a pig can eat and digest grass while we cannot. A pig will not thrive on grass alone, but it can make a substantial part of its diet. And it will convert virtually anything that you grow or produce on the farm into good meat. Throw any vegatable matter, of whatever kind, to a pig, and he will either eat it -converting it within hours to good meat and the best compost in the world -or he will tread it into the ground, dung on it and turn it into compost that way. Put a pig on rough grass land that you wish to bring into cultivation, and he will plough it for you, and root it up for you, and manure it for you, and at the same time extract sustenance from it to live and grow on.

Dan gaat het nog even verder wat varkens dan precies moeten eten -alles dus- en hoe je ze daarna moet slachten en in stukjes snijden. Hoe dan ook: er gaat hier nogal eens wat eten in de vuilnisbak, de tuin produceert een hoop perzikken, nectarines, appels, pruimen en abrikozen. Die van de boom vallen, liggen gewoon weg te rotten, en dat kan veel beter. Zo hebben we nu dus sinds drie dagen twee biggetjes, Scraps en Belly genaamd, die voor ons GFT verwerken, het landje omploegen, gratis compost maken en dus heerlijk mals scharrelvlees aanzetten.
Verder zijn ze eigenlijk ook gewoon TE schattig.
